This is essentially the same thing as a well-known phenomenon called “The Moon Illusion”.

Basically, the moon behaves the exact same way - and watching it is a lot safer than staring at the sun!

Anyway - this is an optical illusion - that much is for sure.

If you ask people to show you how big the sun appears by holding out their hand at arm’s length and showing how big it is with finger and thumb - they’ll say it’s at LEAST twice, maybe three times larger than it really is!
