Why the surface of copper powder becomes black when heated slowly in a China dish

Copper black when heated slowly .
This black coloured substance formed on the surface of copper is copper oxide ( CuO)

When oxygen present in the air reacts with copper , it forms a layer of copper oxide .

2Cu + O₂ -----> 2CuO
