onion have cells which releases a compound called sulfenic acid. This acid get mix with the enzymes of onion and releases another gas called propanethiol S-oxide. This gas get mixed with the water present in your eyes and produce sulphuric acid. This sulphuric acid irritates your eyes and makes you cry!!
