Teeth are hard ecto-mesodermal derivatives found in buccal cavity for mastication of food. In some animals teeth also serve as organs of offence and defence. Following terms describe dentition in mammals.

Heterodont: - When the teeth are of different type on the basis of structure and function, eg. Mammal like rabbit have different types of teeth like incisors, canines, premolars and molars.

Thecodont: - The teeth which are present in bony socket of jaw, eg. Rabbit, Man and Crocodile.

Diphyodont: - The teeth which appear twice in life. eg. Incisors, Canines, Molars in man, rabbit.
