Why the temperature of a gas rises when it is suddenly compressed?

let us take gas as the system and rest other as surrounding .when the pressure outside the system is more than it then the work is done on the system as a result it compresses ( increase in density and decrease in volume ) work is done on the system so the surrounding lose heat to the system so temp. of the system (gas) rises.as temp .is the function of heat.....
