Why the terace of buildings are filled with small stones?

A layers of pebbles can substantially extend the life of a flat roof. A flat roof will have several layers of a thin membrane made of tar, asphalt, and or bitumen material. Pebbles or small rocks spread several inches thick over the outer roof membrane will protect the roof membrane from cracking and peeling due to prolonged sun exposure, there by extending the life of the roof by several years.
