Why the thickness of the earth's crust varies widely between continental masses and the ocean floor?

it is due to geographical consequences like earthquake, temperature difference, lava eruption etc. if the temperature is low the ice would likely not melt so land is high. if ice is melted then part of land must jave submerged inside water. even tectonic movement play major role as they build moutains and valleys and make the land uneven. moreover gravity also plays ann important role too as at poles there is much more gravity than equator which determines the hieight of mountains. so you see it all depends on geographic conditions
