Low lying plants grow early in spring before trees leaf- out and block the sun. Leaves are dropped in the autumn and new ones are grown in the spring. Thin, broad, light-weight leaves to capture a lot of sunlight but also allow for water loss. Bark on trees is thick to protect against cold winters.
