Sugar (glucose) normally is not found in urine. But when blood sugar levels rise well above a target range-which can occur in type 1 and type 2diabetes-the kidneys often release some of the excess sugar from the blood into the urine.

Urine in diabetic patients indicates the presence of sugar or glucose. Having diabetes increases the chances of spilling glucose into the urine if blood glucose levels are too high. The kidneys will make their best effort to get rid of excess glucose once blood glucose levels climb above 180 mg/dl.
