In a capacitor there are one or more pairs of conductors separated by an insulator. Capacitors accumulate charge . Instant change without continuation would imply that its derivative would not be finite which means that the electric current would be infinite. We all know thats not possible as of now. THus voltage across the capacitor cannot be changed instantly.
