Ventricles have thicker walls than atria because they have to do more work. On the right and left sides of the heart, the atria act as receiving chambers for incoming blood. The ventricles, on the other hand, have to pump the blood out of the heart.

The left ventricle is thicker than the right ventricle. This is because more pressure is needed to drive the blood from the heart through the body is entire circulatory system. The right ventricle only has to pump blood to the lungs for gas exchange.
