Why there are four strings of different thickness in a violin?

The four strings on a violin have different thicknesses, but are all under approximately the same tension. Do waves travel faster on the thick strings or the thin strings? ... So you see that thicker (denser) strings have a larger denominator (since they have more mass per unit length) and thus reduce the speed of sound.
