Normally, meiosis causes a halving of chromosome material, so that each parent gives 23 chromosomes to a pregnancy. The result is an egg or sperm with only 23 chromosomes. When fertilization occurs, the normal 46 total number ofchromosomes results in the fetus.

✨here's your answer :-

➡there are 23 chromosomes in a baby because it is the characteristic feature of human beings to have only 23 chromosomes.

➡these chromosomes are basically 22 autosomes ( similar in shape and size or exact copy of each other) and 1 sex chromosome ( either XX if female or XY if male ), which help in sex determination of the respective baby.

➡also , in meiosis , each parent contributes only one chromosome to the offspring so that during fertilization , the original number of chromosomes are restored in the embryo or foetus.

➡hence, a baby have only 23 pairs of chromosomes.
