The thorns in the cactus plant help to reduce transpiration. As we know that, Cactuses are mostly found in deserts, where the heat is very much higher than the normal regions. This causes water to evaporate at a faster rate. If Cactuses had leaves, then most of the water would transpire and very less will remain in the plant body, which would not be sufficient for its survival. So, the leaves of Cactuses have reduced to thorns to reduce transpiration and help the plant retain maximum water.

Hope this helps you!
