Where there is no light then there is darkness. This means that a surrounding without light would be black in color.

Actually space is full of countless stars, galaxies, planets, and all those stuff. But, the problem is - we can't see it - well, ALL. We can't see all.

We see because of light. Imagine a object, maybe a football. We can see it. Hmmm..why? As mentioned earlier, we see things because of light. Light falls on a object and reflects into our eyes; then, we can see it. So that means, there must be a source of light, nearby the football which enables us to see it. Like footballs, we can see almost every object in the Earth. Because there is plenty of light. There's sunlight, light bulbs. So much light. Quite a bountiful, I have to say.

But, in space, there isn't enough light. A little light dispersed from nearby stars let us see some objects. Only some. For instance, Mars, The moon, etc. There are plenty of other matter (stuff) in space, we can't see, because of no light present between our eyes and the object in space. That looks dark. Black, to our eyes.

We can only see nearly 10% or less out of the whole universe. Here, comes the concept of dark matter. Space researchers are pretty sure that there are so much more in the space, which is not visible to our eyes because of the absence of light.  That's why, they term non-visible object, yet present in the space, as dark matter - matter which can't be seen.
