There is the gap between railway tracks because in summer due to heat iron expands and thus it replace the gap. But if there is no gap then in summer or in winter due to expandation or comtraction the railway tracks get damaged and thus there may be chance of accidents.

In any bridge gap at joints are provided to allow for the expansion of rails/slabs which may due to the rise of temperature in summer.If we do no provide this gap then there may be a failure due to crushing of slab/rail over one another.This gap is provided in such a way that half of the gap is maintained even after the expansion.
