why there is gap between railway track ?? and why there is stone between railway tracks

railway tracks are made up of metal so during summers the metal expands and if there will be no gap between the metal. The metal will be one over the another.

The stones don't allow vegetation to grow on railway tracks which could weaken the ground on which the railway lines run. 2. Track ballast also keeps water from reaching the track on a regular basis and softening the ground
