So that there is enough margin for the tracks
to expand and contract due to the
temperature changes. If that gap is not left
then the tracks might have enormous stress in
them while expanding due to heat.

Question: Why is there gap left between the railway tracks?
Solution: Two sections of a railway track are not welded together. Instead they are laid with gaps between them. This allows expansion and contraction of rails during summer and winter seasons. If there are no gaps in the sections of railway tracks, they may DE-shape due to expansion in summer.
