"So in this sense Brahma is more closer to living beings than to Gods. Leaving avataras out of this discussion because they are different forms of Vishnu / Shiva. According to Skaanda Purana, it is due to a curse from Siva."

Very few temples of Lord Brahma exist  in the world because there are many mythological reasons but it is believed to be that Shiva cursed Brahma for lying to win a race.Once,Brahma and Vishnu began  argument on who was the most powerful. Then the other gods asked lord Shiva. There was a challenge that whoever views the top of Lord Shiva's head first would be declared as the most powerful. As both Vishnu and Brahma set about their task, they quickly realized it was an impossible task. Then Brahma notices a ( ketaki )flower floating by, she fell from Lord Shiva's head many thousand years ago. Lord Brahma made the flower to lie to lord Shiva that he had seen the top Shiva's head.
But when this was heard bu lord Shiva,he curses Bramha that he will never be worshipped on Earth. Also the flower was cursed to never be used in rituals. It also believed that it is also due to the curse of goddess Saraswati too!
Hope this helps friend!
