Why there is spaces between the railway tracks there is spaces between two rails in railway tracks?

there is space between railway tracks because when train runs on the track it applies so much pressure so as to distribute the pressure equally they have spaces between them.

i dont remember it we'll but my teacher once told me as in summers the tracks i.e the metal expands a bit and so as not to cause accident space is left
b/w them.....
