Thoracic cavity is gaurded dorsally by vetibral column,ventrally by the sternum,laterally by the ribs and diaphragm on the lower side. It is maintained at a typical volume as it influence any volume. It will be airtight to maintain different air volumes in lunga at different phases of respiration .
