That factor slows erosion and water runoff, reducing the need for watering throughout the growing season. Reducing water runoff results in less mineral leaching and better soil nutrition. The large amounts of mulch used to build soil quality also serve to suppress weed growth. No-till systems take much longer to build than till systems because soil amendments are piled on top of soil instead of mixed into soil. Several years are needed to build healthy soil with a no-till system. After the first one or two years, however, garden chores such as watering and weeding are dramatically reduced.
