A sphere has just one surface only, that is curved, not plane.

So, curved surface area & total surface area of a sphere is the same…

But, if we talk about hemisphere, it has one curved & one plane surface. So, curved surface & total surface area in case of hemisphere, are 2 different areas.

We can memorize the formulae in the following order..

(1) area of circle = pi r²

(2) curved surface area of hemisphere= 2 pi r²

(3) total surface area of hemisphere = 3 pi r²

(4) curved surface or total surface area of sphere = 4 pi r²
