In total internal reflection there is no significant loss of energy and the reflected ray has whole of the energy of incident light wave so a brighter image is formed, but in plane mirror some energy is absorbed inside hence loss of energy.

The use of a total reflecting prism gives us an image much brighter than that obtained by using a plane mirror. It is for this reason that a total reflecting prism is used in place of a plane mirror to deviate the light ray 90o in a periscope and by 180o in a binocular and in cameras.
