Answer:

They chose red as the color for stop, it is thought, because red has for centuries been used to indicate danger. ... Thus, the railroad decided to change it so the green light meant go and a caution “yellow” was chosen, primarily because the color is so distinct from the other two colors used.

Answer:

From our high school physics, we can recollect that 7 colors of light spectrum are VIBGYOR (Violet–Indigo–Blue–Green–Yellow–Orange–Red) and these are in increasing order of wavelength. That is, Violet has least and Red has highest wavelength. Since longer wavelength can travel for longer distance, the colors with longest wavelengths are picked for Signals. Since Orange is too similar to Red under bright light and thus could cause confusion, Orange was not used.

The three signs of traffic light : Stop. Caution and Go were given the color in increasing order of importance to be notified. For example, Stop needs to notified to person driving a car as early as possible so that he can react and come to stop. Thus it was given red color which has the highest wavelength, and hence can be viewed from farthest distance. Similarly the Caution sign was given next preference and finally the Go sign. The following 2 min video explains why red color can travel the longest distance!
