The high melting points of transition metals are due to the involvement of greater number electrons of (n - 1)d in addition to the ns electrons in the interatomic metallic bonding.

Across a period of 3rd series, the melting points of these metals increase to a maximum of d^5 except for anomalous values of Mn and Tc decreases regularly as the atomic number increases.
