A valence electron is a single electron which is responsible for the chemical properties of the atom. Transition metals are goodcatalyst as they easily give and take electrons from other molecules (have variable oxidation states) and provide sufficient surface area for the reaction to take place.

Transition metals and their compounds function as catalysts either because of their ability to change oxidation state or, in the case of the metals, to adsorb other substances on to their surface and activate them in the process. All this is explored in the main catalysis section.
