Why transverse waves cannot travel through air or gases ?

In gases, atoms can move freely past each other because atoms have no equilibrium location and if one atom is moved by a disturbance, there's no restoring force to pull it back to its equilibrium location. That's why transverse waves cannot travel through gases or air.
