Because at the point of intersection the compass will show two directions which is actually not possible.

If magnetic field lines intersect each other then the magnetic field(magnetic field lines) will have two different directions at that point. ... Because magnetic field lines just represent the direction of the field ateach point and it can't point two different directions at the same place.
