Why two rays are considered when showing image formation by any mirror or lens

two rays are considered because umbra is lighted portion and penumbra is dark so to tell these both we tell two rays

two rays are considered because it is not possible to obtain an image with one ray.
with one ray the position of the image cannot be determined.
