Why upper surface of the leaf has fewer stomata ?

The upper part of the leaf has fewer stomata, as compared to that of the lower part, because it is the upper portion which is mostly exposed to the sunlight and wind.

Being more stomata in the lower part of the leaf, helps in reducing the rate of evaporation as the sunlight is less there.
