Why -ve sign is used in real and inverted image in lens while +ve is used in mirrors?

Real images are inverted and thus fall below x axis. therefore they are -ve.

First of all, These sign conventions are based on the cartesian plane.I guess you have some knowledge about the x-y axes in the guess.It's just the same.
When the image fall on right side (X) or upwards (Y) of the cartesian plane we use '+ve ' sign , while if the image fall on left side(X') or downwards(Y')of the Cartesian plane we use '-ve' sign.Simple ^.^
