Since viruses show the characteristics of both living and non-living, they are called the "Biological Puzzle".

Explanation:

  • Viruses are acellular entities composed of nucleic acid (DNA or RNA), but never both and surrounded by a protein coat (capsid), so they can be called complex organic matter.
  • Outside a living host, viruses do not show any sign of living but inside a host, they replicate themselves to make copies of the viruses. They manage to hijack the machinery of the cell to multiply virus particles by using and aggregating molecules from the host protoplasm.
  • Viruses can evade the immune system of a cell by constantly changing their genetic material i.e. mutation. There are some retro-viruses that can change their type of genetic material (DNA to RNA or vice versa) and have higher infective capacity.

Henceforth, scientists call viruses "The Biological Puzzle/Enigma".
