Viruses are infectious organisms and are dependent on their host. They behave like non-living organisms before entering a host, once they are enetered they take control of the host's cells machinery to grow large in numbers.

Moreover, they behave like living-organisms because of the presence of some proteins and glycoproteins in them. They are like cells as they contain genetic information in the form of DNA or RNA. They have the ability to evolve themselves once they enter their host's body.

Answer:

viruses are considered as non-living as long as they do not enter a living body because viruses do not perform the things that a living thing can do.

for example-

1. living things use energy but viruses don't.

2. living things grow by using energy but a virus cannot as it doesn't use energy.

3. living things reproduce whereas a virus can't cause it doesn't have the tools like organelles, nuclei, or even ribosome, for coping their genes.

thus they are considered non-living.

The only time when viruses show their character is when they enter a living body (only then they can be called living). It is when they act like a parasite making the living body a host.
