Why voltmeter connected in parallel to measure potential difference

voltmeter measures potential difference and it has high internal resistance. As it is connected in parallel with a circuit component the amount of current through the voltmeter is very less. So the current through the circuit is not altered and thus it is connected in parallel combination.
