Because ali's only daughter Miriam got married and left him. He has got no news of ali since 5 years.hence ali is lead4 a cheerful existence

ali can now realize the feelings of separation as his daughter married a soldier and left to punjab with her husband.now,he was waiting for a letter from his daughter.from this we can say that ali is leading a cheerless existence
