Antonio didn't know the reason of his melancholic mood. The sadness makes him tired. He don't know how he acquired, got and of what origin is it from. He says that he still has to learn the reason. He also says that the sadness makes him so absentminded that he doesn't know who he is.

Salarino guesses that Antonio must be sad and worried of his investments in ships. He gave an example that while cooling his soup, the wind will remind him of the storms and strong winds at sea which could damage the ships. The sandy hour glass reminded him of the shallow waters and sand banks which could possibly sink the ship. He said that he couldn't go to the church because when he'll see the rocks in the church, it will remind him of the huge rocks at sea which could tear the ship apart.

Antonio told him that he wasn't worried about his investments and financial condition because he didn't make investments in on ship going to one place but in different ships going to different lands.

Salarino thinks that he is in love but Antonio tells him that he is wrong. Salarino then gives the example of Janus and said that you are sad because you're not happy.
