Explanation:

Dronacharya's favorite was Arjun due to his dedication to learning. The special thing about Arjun was that he was ready to learn anything and everything (which is why he was so multi talented), and he put so much of his time and effort into learning what he loved.

But because of his dedication and love towards his mentor Arjuna won his heart. Drona tried many things like sending Arjuna to take water when he was teaching Ashwathama or never giving him food in darkness. But Arjuna would some how return faster with water and have those lessons and once somehow wind blew the lamps and he ate food in darkness and thus realized that he would also fire in darkness. He started practicing and firing arrows in darkness. Seeing his resolved Drona then decided to teach him to be the best.

Later to find out his best student Drona took a test where a machine in form of alligator grasped his feet in water. When no one came forward Arjuna saved him and passed the test. After this Arjuna became his favorite student and he blessed him with celestial weapons.
