Ashvamedha yagna, as name suggests, is a horse sacrifice ritual. ... After the king gets satisfied that there is no one who can stand in front of me, he orders and the horse is used to take back to the king's palace and sacrificed. This was done by many kings in order to inscribe their name on the golden pages of history.

It was used by ancient Indian kings to prove their imperial sovereignty: a horse accompanied by the king's warriors would be released to wander for a period of one year.
