After the battle of buxar, awadh signed the treaty of allahabad with the british. In 1801,a second treaty was signed at the time of wellesley, and half of awadh was taken away y British. Since then the nawabs of awadh were dependents of British. In 1856, Dalhousie annexed awadh without any proper provocation, and its ruler wajid ali shah was deposed. This act of british was universally condemnd and became one of main causes behind the revolt of 1857

On february 13, 1856, Lord Dalhousie annexed awadh on pretext of maladministration by nawab wajid ali shah who was sent to calcutta on a pension of Rs. 12 Lakh per annum
