Bahadur shah Zafar was declared the emperor of India due to the following reasons:

1) there was no other king left who could stand against the British

2) no rebel was ready to become the leader and lead the rest

3) every rebel was worried about their own kingdom and therefore they didn’t want to become the leader

Due to these reasons, the rebels marched to Delhi and declared him to be their leader.
