The Bastille was a symbol of oppression of the monarchy; it was a political prison. Persons could be arrested and detained there without charges on the request of an aristocrat. Bastille was the most hated prison in France.
This was because it stood for the despotic power of the King Louis XI and it had all the people who opposed the king mainly there were political prisoners.
