Bengal partitioned in 1905 according to the nationalist leaders because the partition seperated the largely Muslim eastern areas from the largely Hindu western areas. It was definitely the 'divide & rule' policy for the Indian and the whole population was outraged about the fact that colonisers were turning native population against itself in order rule.

Lord Curzon, the architect of the partition, knew that splitting Bengal, would weaken their influence and divide the nationalist movement. When the announcement was made in July 1905, leaders in Bengal urged the people to boycott British goods. They wanted to put economic pressure on England
