Birsa Munda was a prominent tribal freedom fighter of India who belonged to the Munda tribe. During the period of 1899 to 1900, he led the then famous “Munda rebellion” with the motive of establishing “Munda Raj” in the southern province of Ranchi. Later, he was arrested by the British and died in jail

He was hurt by the forest act of 1882 because the british goverment notified all wastelands of village as protected forest in 1883-1884. By doing so,british started restricting the rights of the forest communities. A terrible faminine broke out in 1895.
