1) Gandhi's opposition led the Indian National Congress to reject the British offer.
2) Cripps' modification of the original British offer, which provided for no real transfer of power.
3) the behind-the-scenes efforts of the Viceroy and Secretary of State for India to sabotage the mission.

Stafford Cripps, a member of Winston Churchill's cabinet, headed a commission which came to India in 1942. It came with the plea that India lend a helping hand in Britain's war effort in World War II. In return it promised India dominion status after the war was over and free elections. This was turned down by the then Indian leadership and all top leaders of the Congress were imprisoned as the Quit India movement was launched under Gandhi's leadership.
