Answer:
Dettol was not effecting to stop bleeding because it is an antiseptic not an astringent.
Explanation:
The diffrence between antiseptic and astringent is:
1. Antiseptic -
- Antiseptic materials are antimicrobial substances that can be applied to living tissues or skin in order to reduce the possibility of infection/sepsis called putrefaction.
- Destroys bacterias on living tissues reducing risk of infection.
- We can distinguish antiseptics from antibiotics through the ability of antibiotics to safely destroy bacteria within the body.
- i.e. Dettol.
2. Astringent -
- Astringent is a type of substance that can cause shrinkage or constriction of body tissues.
- Causes shrinkage of living tissues and promotes blood clotting, reducing bleeding.
- Sometimes this substance is also named adstringent, derived from the Latin word adstringere, which means “to bind fast.”
- i.e. isopropyl alcohol, witch hazel, calamine, green or black tea etc.
