The main character is Dr Herriot, who was a veterinary doctor. He save the life of Tricki who was extremely ill. Tricki was not eating anything. In order to take the dog with him, doctor told her master that the dog needed some days in hospital. Doctor put the dog in an isolated room where he just gave him water for 15 days. The separation from the dog made  Mrs. Pumphrey fall into tears but this somehow made the dog better and he started to return back to normal life
