According to the fluid mosaic model, there is a lipid bilayer that means two molecules layer in which the protein molecules are embedded. The lipid bilayer provides fluidity and elasticity to the membrane. The fluid mosaic model is the most acceptable model and the main function of this model is to give shape to the cell.

Explanation:

The Fluid Mosaic Model was first proposed in 1972 , it explained about  the structure of the plasma membrane. This model has evolved slowly  over the time, but it still accounts for the structure and functions of the plasma membrane because now we understand them.

According to the Fluid Mosaic Model, the membranes are composed of two layers of phospholipids molecules, in which their hydrophilic heads  meet the water in and out of the cell, while their hydrophobic tails are present inside the membrane.

Some of the protein molecules work as cell identification sites for different substances like nutrients and hormones, while others work as gates to pass the substances to and from the cell.
