Rutherford used gold for his scattering experiment because gold is the most malleable metal and he wanted the thinnest layer as possible

Hi....

Ruherford wanted a very thin of a metal. Gold is the most malleable metal. It can be easily beaten into a very thin sheet. But any other metal cannot be into a very thin sheet. So he used gold foil.

Hope it helps...
