In the lesson, The Thief's Story there is a character named Hari Singh. He was a small boy but was a clever thief. Its given in the story that Hari Singh was in out of practice. This is because, Hari Singh hadn't done any theft or crime from the time he was with Anil. Anil used to give Hari care and sympathy. He also used to teach him. His affection and love has changed the minds of Hari from evil to good. That's why he lagged the practice of theft. We clearly know that, in this story Hari at beginning was a thief. He better knew how to fool and deceive others. He anyhow managed to deceive Anil into his plan seeing him a carefree, simple and kind man.

When Hari started working for Anil, he tried to change. He used to study and learn English. Even at time of shopping, he pinched some money. Overall, his life was going good. But when he saw Anil brought a bundle of notes as his income, some evil thoughts of theft started sprouting in his mind. He thought to steal that money so that he can earn a lot at once. But then he thought that though he was in our of practice, he knew well how to get that money.

This story is written by Ruskin Bond. He is a well known writer of human values and their deeds. The moral of the story is that human values and kind nature can change anyone from bad to good. The best example is shown here in this story. This story revolves around a little boy of a teen age who was pushed to criminal background due to his social problems. But due to Anil's love and care he became a good boy. He left those theft businesses and wanted to live as a respectable man. Anil was not like a normal man. He understood that Hari tried to rob him. But due to his kind, simple and subtle nature, he didn't take any action against him. He wanted to transform that boy through his love and affection.

  • Anil was a casual man, he said that he would not pay any money to Hari.
  • Anyways,  Hari worked for him.
  • Many days had passed, and apart from cheating at the shops, he hadn't practised thievery.
  • That is why, when he was with Anil , he had not cheated anyone, nor had practised thievery.

Aftermath:-

  • Hari thought that he used to work for Anil, still Anil wasted the money on his friends.
  • Hence, he thought to steal Anil's money.
  • One night he took out and stole the Bundle that Anil had made that day. He reached the station and without buying the ticket, was about to  jump the train but couldn't.
  • Now, he thought to be a great man, he needed to learn and write. So, he went back to Anil.
